A St. Landry Parish deputy is recovering after being hit by a vehicle during an attempted encounter with a suspect who then fled the scene.

According to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office, the deputy — in his early 20s — suffered a possible broken or dislocated leg or hip. Authorities say the deputy was trying to approach the driver when the individual refused to exit the vehicle and intentionally struck him.

“The individual was in his vehicle and ran over our deputy. We think he’s going to be OK, but he’s got either a leg or hip injury,” said Sheriff Bobby Guidroz.Guidroz said the suspect is still on the run, and deputies are continuing their search.

The injured deputy was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover. The sheriff’s office is urging residents to report any suspicious activity or tips related to the case.
