Cajuns softball wins Sun Belt Championship

SAN MARCOS, TX (KATC) Summer Ellyson throws a two-hit shutout as Louisiana wins the Sun Belt Championship Saturday in San Marcos, TX.

Alissa Dalton drove in the Cajuns only run in a 1-0 win over Coastal Carolina. The hit was a two-out double in the first inning. Dalton recorded two of the Cajuns’ five hits.

Summer Ellyson struck out seven in the game.

The victory is Louisiana’s 50th win of the season and marks its 15th Sun Belt title.

After the game speaking on the ESPN+ broadcast coach Gerry Glasco got emotional when discussion the difficult season that started with the death of his daughter, and Louisiana assistant coach Gerri Ann.

“The kids have helped pull me through. There have been times I’m over emotional. There are times I’m angry too quick and I’ve been fighting a lot of emotional stuff,” he said. “But they’ve been great and stick with me. I thank God for these girls. They’re my family.”

The Cajuns now await their fate in the NCAA tournament. Louisiana is a top-10 team in the polls, but sit 18th in the latest Ratings Power Index. The last non-power five team team to host an NCAA regional was the Cajuns back in 2016. That season two small conference teams hosted, Louisiana and James Madison.
