LAFAYETTE (Press Release) – Sophomore shortstop Hayden Cantrelle has been named the Sun Belt Player of the Week and the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) Player of the Week after etching his name into the Ragin’ Cajuns’ baseball record books, the conference office and the LSWA announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Cantrelle is the first Ragin’ Cajun to earn a weekly honor from the Sun Belt since Colten Schmidt was named Pitcher of the Week on April 10, 2018, and the first to garner Player of the Week recognition from the conference since Stefan Trosclair on May 23, 2016. It is the first weekly Sun Belt award of his career.

The LSWA honor is the second of Cantrelle’s career, the first coming after the ULM series a season ago when he tallied six extra base hits, including two doubles, a triple and three home runs.

Cantrelle got his week started off with a bang against Northwestern State, becoming the fourth player in program history and the first since Trosclair in 2016 to hit for the cycle. He followed that performance up with a home run in his next two games before piecing together a three-hit, three RBI outing against Appalachian State on Saturday.

Over the course of the five-game stretch, the sophomore went 10-for-20 at the plate with three homers, two doubles, a triple and seven RBI, while scoring 10 runs. He is now on a 13-game hitting streak.

The two honors come after Cantrelle went 11-for-21 with three home runs and two doubles against the likes of New Orleans, Southern Miss and Little Rock in the previous week. During Game Two of the Little Rock series, Cantrelle became the 10th player in school history to hit three homers in the same game.

Louisiana returns to action on Tuesday evening when it welcomes in-state foe Tulane to Russo Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on Cox Sports Television (CST) and ESPN+.
