LAFAYETTE (PRESS RELEASE) – Malik Marquetti scored 24 points and three other members of the Vermilion team eclipsed the 20-point mark in a 105-95 win over the White team as the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns men’s basketball held its final intrasquad scrimmage on Thursday at the Cajundome.

JaKeenan Gant scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds with Jeremy Hayes adding 21 and Marcus Stroman 20 as the Vermilion team trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half before taking its first lead of the game – 45-44 – a pair of free throws by Marquetti with 2:07 remaining.

The White team snapped a 71-all deadlock in the second half as P.J. Hardy connected on the 3-pointer and Jalen Johnson scored on a layup. But the Vermilion squad bounced back and eventually took the lead for good as Stroman scored on a layup for an 89-87 lead with 4:39 left.

Jerekius Davis led the White team with 30 points with freshman Trajan Wesley adding 21 and Justin Miller 14. Johnson, a Saint Louis University transfer who will sit out the 2018-19 season to fulfill the NCAA Transfer Rule, added 13 and Cedric Russell 11 as the White team shot 58 percent (19-for-33) in the first half and 52 percent (34-for-65) for the game.

Louisiana will officially open the 2018-19 season on Tuesday (Nov. 6) when it plays host to the University of the Virgin Islands in a 7:15 p.m. contest at the Cajundome.
