LAFAYETTE (PRESS RELEASE) – After rushing for 191 yards and three touchdowns in Louisiana Football’s 42-27 win at Texas State over the weekend, Louisiana Football sophomore running back Elijah Mitchell (Erath, Louisiana) has been named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

FIRST TIME IN A WHILE: Louisiana has not had a Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week since Elijah McGuire won the honor on Sept. 19, 2016.  In McGuire’s 2016 performance he ran for 223 yards on 23 carries, scoring one touchdown in Louisiana’s 28-23 win over South Alabama.

MITCHELL WAS UNSTOPPABLE: Mitchell’s performance at Texas State, running for the 191 yards on 20 carries was the 14th best performance in Louisiana history, tying Brian Mitchell’s performance at Tulane on Nov. 1, 1986.  Mitchell’s 191 yards was the most by a Louisiana back since Alonzo Harris ran for 189 yards at Middle Tennessee on Oct. 29, 2011.

On top of his great performance in school history, Mitchell’s performance is the 22nd best performance in the nation by anyone this season.  Mitchell helped Louisiana get its first conference win of the 2018 season, with his three touchdowns being the first time that has happened in a game since Anthony Jennings rushed for three at Georgia on Nov. 19, 2016.

SPORTSWRITERS AGREE: Mitchell was also named the Louisiana Sports Writer’s Association Offensive Player of the Week to add to his SBC honors.  He is the first to earn those honors since Jordan Davis was tabbed LSWA Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 11, 2017.

During that game Davis threw for 309 yards, on 21-for-32 passing, tossing two touchdowns, while on the ground Davis ran for 60 yards and scored two more touchdowns giving him 396 total yards and four total touchdowns in Louisiana’s matchup with Tulsa.
