Even before clarifying his Drew Brees retirement comments, Tuesday, Saints head coach Sean Payton opened the door to New Orleans drafting a quarterback, perhaps one that would be considered the quarterback in waiting.

Payton confirmed the team held a virtual meeting with Jordan Love, the Utah State quarterback who is considered a first or second round pick.

"We spent a whole month in virtual meetings. We had quarterbacks, linemen, anyone we didn't complete at the combine, anyone we had follow-up work to do," Payton said. "I wasn't apart of the meeting with Jordan, but we've done a ton of those in lieu of the pro days where you have those chances to do it in person."

In his latest mock draft, ESPN's Todd McShay penciled Love in at number 6 to the Chargers. Love is not as NFL ready as other quarterbacks in the draft, which is one reason some analyst consider Love to New Orleans as perfect fit. There he could learn from a QB guru in Payton, and a hall-of-famer in Brees.

Don't expect New Orleans to try trading up for a quarterback in the first round, but if Love is there at the end of the first, as many expect, it appears the team is at least willing to flirt with Love or any other quarterback they like.
