There’s only about a month left of summer and if you’re anything like me, that is fabulous news. The weather is about to get cooler, Halloween is around the corner and it will officially be time for fall flavors.
While pumpkin spice is usually the standout flavor as soon as September arrives, Pillsbury has a limited-edition fall cookie flavor that may just beat it this year: salted caramel apple! Filled with bits of tart apple and sweet salted caramel, you can find the flavor in stores nationwide now.
The flavor is not completely new, but this year, the dough is safe to eat raw so you can dig into the package without even having to bake it! Of course, if you choose to eat it raw, you will be missing out on the glorious smell that goes along with baking cookies, but it’s nice to have the option to eat it raw if you just can’t wait to take a bite of caramel apple goodness.
Pillsbury’s entire line of ready-to-bake cookies will be safe to eat raw by the end of the summer, including favorite flavors like chocolate chip and sugar cookie, plus seasonal treats like pumpkin, hot cocoa and strawberry cheesecake. There will even be safe-to-eat brownie dough if you prefer eating that raw instead.
All ready-to-bake products will now have a “Safe to Eat Raw” seal showing that you can either eat them right from the package or bake them. So, if you want to sneak a bite of the raw dough before popping the cookies in the oven, you can now do so safely.
Pillsbury says the new safe-to-eat-raw doughs taste the same as the versions you already know, as the recipe has not changed. The only difference is that the company is now using heat-treated flour and pasteurized eggs, which makes it safe to enjoy the dough without baking it.
Nestle also makes edible cookie dough, though it is not meant to be baked at all. The cookie dough comes in a container that resembles a pint of ice cream and there are four flavors available: chocolate chip, peanut butter cookie dough, Funfetti and fudge brownie batter.
Nestle’s doughs are available at select stores like Walmart, ShopRite, Hy-Vee, Meijer and others.
You can even step things up a notch and grab some of these edible cookie dough ice cream bites from Bubbies Hawaii Ice Cream & Desserts. The double dessert treat comes in four flavors: chocolate chip, brownie batter, sugar cookie and birthday cake.
Of course, you could always make your own edible cookie dough if you’re up to the task, and if you’re looking for a recipe, Ben & Jerry’s has released the recipe used for the dough in their chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream!
The recipe takes just 15 minutes to make. If you can manage to not eat it all right away, you can store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week or in the freezer for up to six months.
