About nine months ago, Hammer and Stain opened in Lafayette but then the coronavirus threw a wrench into business.

“‘Oh my God, I just opened,” thought owner Tammy Milam, “and I’m basically a start-up business.”

Shortly thereafter, Milam picked herself up and got Hammer & Stain back into the game.

“So, I thought about it at night, and said, ‘Let’s just do the DIY kits’, just get stuff out there because people will need this kind of creativity because it’s so stressful right now.”

Where once customers came into Hammer and Stain and worked on a project, perhaps with a mini-party thrown in, the DIY kits are now going out to the homes of customers. However, not everything is built for "work-at-home”, especially when—at least in her shop—a tool like a nail gun might be used.

"We have had to limit some of the projects for DIY take in home because some of them do need guidance, step-by-step guidance like we do in our classes,” explains Milam.

Now, with children being home, there’s an even greater need for children-catered DIY projects.

“If you go to our website, they can choose whatever they like,” adds Milam. “They can choose their paint color, their stains. We put it all together in a kit.”

That means gloves, stains, aprons, even a paper drop cloth. “I even include paper for the table so they don’t mess up their house,” she smiles.

Milam’s got plenty of ideas for folks wishing to honor their pets too.

“Oh, yeah, those are my babies”. Plus, they say this is the perfect time to recognize some extra-special graduates. “It’s a commemorative class. 2020. I mean this is history that we’re making,” Milam says sympathetically.

Tammy Milam can’t wait to hold classes in her shop and see her customers, but in the meantime. “You roll with the punches, you learn how to do other things. It pushes you to other limitations.”
