Construction on a walking path at an Opelousas Park is continuing with completion expected in the coming weeks.

The Opelousas General Health System Foundation and the City of Opelousas funded the construction of a walking trail in the city's South Park.

Representative Dustin Miller, who helped secured these funds for the path, says construction was started and it is now in its final stages. The black top has been laid on the 1.1 mile track and should be finished in the next few days. Cleco will also be adding lights and have cameras set up to allow citizens to enjoy the park at night.

Flowers and benches will be put up to add more decoration to the area.

Miller says that the path will give residents a place to exercise safely. He says the feedback has been amazing.

"Everyone is excited that they have a place to exercise."

Patrick Fontenot, a member of the hospital foundation board says that another three weeks of construction is expected and a grand opening will likely happen in early July. They hope the community will be patient while the work is continuing.

"This adds something in the city that we didn't have. During COVID, we realized we had a unhealthy community," he said.
