Vermilion Schools update for October 13

Clean-up and repairs are underway in Vermilion Parish schools, so they'll be ready for students on Thursday.

In a Facebook live, Superintendent Tommy Byler said central office workers will be at work tomorrow, and teachers are going in to their schools to check to make sure everything is ready for students to return to class on Thursday.

Gueydan High School, Jesse Owens Elementary and Eaton Park Elementary will not be open Thursday, he said. Gueydan and Jesse Owens still don't have power. Eaton Park might have electricity by Thursday or Friday, but as of right now there's no school there for Thursday.

On Thursday, Hybrid students will have a B day and Friday will be an A day. That's only for this week, so all kids can go to school at least one day this week, he said.

Virtual School parents should have received a text today asking for a commitment to stay in virtual school or to come back to the school house. If you don't have electricity, you can come to the central office between 9 a.m. and noon on Wednesday or 9 a.m. and noon on Friday to get a hard-copy form.

Virtual High school will resume on Thursday; Virtual Elementary school will resume on Monday.

If you don't have power or internet, and you're not ready to send your kids to school, just let them know when you're turning in an excuse for the absence, he said.

"We can't solve everyone's problems, but the majority of our people are back up and running, and the majority of our schools are back up and running, and we just feel it's time to get our kids back to school," Byler says.
