The Vermilion Parish School System will push back the start of school because of the storms.

School now will start September 3, according to a post on the system's Facebook page.

New superintendent Tommy Byler says he will post a video later today; we'll post it here as soon as it is up.

Here's the full post:

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM VPSB.The following changes will be taking place as a result of the tropical systems.Vermilion Parish School System offices and schools will be closed at 11 am tomorrow for the remainder of the week.

Because of this situation, the start of the Vermilion Parish school year will be pushed back one week until September 3rd. We will use the same Thursday and Friday schedule that was originally in place, just one week later.

The inability to complete Covid preparations, the delay in delivery of goods, and the possible uses of our buses for mandatory evacuations played a role in this decision. We also want our families ensuring their safety to be a top priority.

The school system wants everyone to stay safe during the possible direct hit and or large storm surge numbers that are currently projected from Tropical Storm Laura. In addition, we are not certain what Hurricane Marco will do in the days preceding Laura.

Our offices and schools are scheduled to be open on August 31st and we hope to finalize our plans that were previously in place for our Strong Start 2020 plan.
