A pillar in the Abbeville community was given a surprise birthday party in the style of the ever popular COVID-19 parade.

Eugene Sellers celebrated his 90th birthday today and while he says he was on his own for most of the day, he was surprised by the caravan of friendly faces.

Family and friends gathered in downtown Abbeville and drove around Magdalen Square with a police escort.

Gene as he is more commonly known, waved to drivers who honked and and cheered from a safe distance.

Sellers has been helping the community of Abbeville for nearly 50 years. As a civil engineer his family says he has had a hand in bettering communities across Acadiana and the state.

His family says that Gene was instrumental in the beautification of Magdalen Square with the addition of the Fountain and Gazebo and Ralph Sellers Baseball Park improvements for the World Series.

He was also one of the founders of the Giant Omelette Festival that brings visitors to Vermilion Parish annually.
