ABBEVILLE, La. - Dozens of high school students in Vermilion Parish have a better understanding of how government works after participating in Government Day on Tuesday in the Abbeville Courthouse.

During the event, students from across the parish were able to run for offices, a "crime" was committed by Louisiana Boy and Girl Staters and a mock trial was held.

The program, sponsored by the American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Vermilion Parish School Board and the Vermilion Parish Police Jury, is the only one still functioning in Louisiana, according to event organizers.

Guest speaker was Lt.Col. Scott Desormeaux, Commander 2nd Battalion 156th Infantry Regiment.

"Its a wonderful program, it gives the students such an opportunity to learn about how our local government and state government works," said Vicki Betts, American Legion Auxiliary President.
