An Abbeville man and a 16-year-old juvenile have been arrested and are facing illegal possession of weapons charges, among others.
According to police, officers were patrolling the city around 12:40 a.m. on Wednesday when they observed a subject known to be a 16-year-old juvenile walking on the road in the company of a man known to officers as Kadaylon Coleman of Abbeville.
Officers approached the two, who did not move to the side of the road. The juvenile was found to be in possession of a handgun that he attempted to hide when they first observed the officers, according to police. The juvenile was arrested, booked on multiple charges including illegal carrying of weapons, juvenile in possession of a firearm, obstruction of justice, and others, and ultimately released into the custody of his mother.
A second handgun was located, which Coleman said he was in possession of and that he had hid when he and the juvenile saw officers in the area. Police learned that Coleman had been convicted of simple burglary in 2019, which stemmed from a charge in which he was accused of breaking into a Lafayette Police Department vehicle and stealing a handgun and ballistic vest from the vehicle.
Coleman was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, illegal carrying of weapons, obstruction of justice, and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.
