Vermilion Parish Rabies Animal Control says the person responsible for killing two dogs and dumping their bodies near Abbeville has been identified.

The two dogs were discovered Wednesday morning, January 27, on Grosse Isle Road in Abbeville, by a Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Deputy.

According to Vermilion Parish Rabies Animal Control, the male dog was shot between the eyes and the female dog was shot in the abdomen. Animal Control tells KATC that the dogs, named Azalea and Snoopy, belonged to an area resident, but they escaped from their home over the weekend.

The suspect has not yet been identified by the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office, but deputies say they'll give us an update in the morning.

An examination by the animal control veterinarian found that the two dogs were shot within 24-36 hours of Wednesday morning when they were discovered by a VPSO deputy. One dog had a collar on when they were discovered, but neither had tags.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Vermilion Parish Animal Control at (337) 643-3160. Voicemails can be left after hours. Animal Control officials say they are conducting an investigation as well and would like to speak to anyone who may have been in the area when the dogs were dumped.

Calls can also be made to the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office and referencing Case No. 21-0000891. We will update with further information from the sheriff's office when it becomes available.
