GUEYDAN, La. — Although most events in Acadiana for the next few weeks have been canceled, Gueydan offered its residents two ways to spend their day.

The city’s mayor, Jude Reese, put together an event called Winter Festival in order for families and friends to come out and enjoy some fresh air.

He says that it is crucial that people and neighbors go out and rekindle relationships in a time of isolation due to the pandemic.

“We should all be caring for each other, we should be looking out for each other,” said Reese. “This is a family; this is the heart and soul of things. I’m not going to let this town die out, we’re going to do something, we’re going to keep breathing and keep moving forward.”

Meanwhile, down the street from City Hall, Le Krewe Du Le Originales Et Les Enfants were getting ready to have their traditional Mardi Gras chicken run and parade.

Their post on Facebook advertised a two-day event that would include live music, a run through the countryside, and a raffle.

The parade passed in front of City Hall, where people were gathered listening to country music and purchasing homemade goods and food from vendors.

Meagan Trahan, who visited the event from Lake Arthur, said it’s important to keep traditions like the parades and runs alive for the younger generations.

“We want to keep the traditions going for the younger ones,” said Trahan.
