The St. Mary Parish School Board has voted to delay the start of school until after Labor Day, with students reporting on September 8.

School board members met in a special meeting Thursday to discuss the start date.

Classes were scheduled to start in the beginning of August.

Parents, students, and staff joined in a rally at the school board's central office on Wednesday, protesting the decision to open schools in August.

The revised calendar was proposed by Superintendent Teresa Bagwell.
