The State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFM) has arrested a Morgan City man for allegedly setting fire to his family’s home, which in turn caught a relative’s vehicle on fire.

Officials say 39-year-old Jeramie Toups was booked into the St. Mary Detention Center on one count of Simple Arson.

According to a release, on Wednesday, July 8, the Morgan City Fire Department responded to a call for a residential fire in the 100 block of Terrebonne Street. One side of the home, and a vehicle parked outside of it, were damaged by the fire. After an assessment of the scene, deputies determined the fire originated in the living room and was intentionally set.

Toups, a resident of the home, was discovered sitting in a chair in the backyard of the home, watching the fire, when firefighters arrived. They say he admitted to police on the scene that he set the fire and was taken into custody by Morgan City Police.

In an interview with deputies, Toups allegedly again admitted to setting the fire and added that he did so after physically damaging the inside following an argument with his relatives. He was then placed under arrest in connection with the case
