Julia B. Maitland Elementary School will remain closed on Friday, October 18, following the incident involving a barricaded suspect in a nearby home.

A heavy police presence was first reported Thursday night on Leona Street, near the school.

Maitland Elementary principal Tonia Verrette says that school will be canceled today and that parents should refrain from bringing or sending students to school until an all clear is given by police.

An alert was sent out to parents via telephone advising them of the school closure.

According to KWBJ, the situation near the school has been resolved. A suspect was taken into custody by Louisiana State Police SWAT team at around 4:00 am on Friday.

The name of the suspect has not been released.

That suspect was reportedly arrested and booked on a charge of aggravated assault with a firearm. Police add that no weapon was found in the home.

An investigation is ongoing. And a statement is expected to be released later on Friday.
