The Coast Guard in Louisiana says that the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway near Berwick will remain closed until salvage plans are made.
Officials with the Coast Guard on Tuesday say that they have no time frame for when the waterway will be opened again. The closure comes after a towing vessel in the area ran aground at mile marker 99 on Sunday evening.
That towing vessel was carrying six hopper barges filled with rock.
Monday, the Coast Guard provided details on the incident saying that the vessel, The Miss Odessa was reportedly transiting south-bound on the Atchafalaya River when it turned west onto the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GICW) and hit bottom. The Miss Odessa, in an attempt to break free, tore apart the barge, causing the barge to split in half.
No pollution was reported. Read the initial report here.
Salvage teams are due to head out to the area to make a plan to remove the barge. There is no time frame for when that will begin.
