A 17 year old from Berwick was arrested on Monday accused of stealing a vehicle and breaking into a St. Mary Parish deputy's patrol vehicle.

On Monday January 25, at around 4:35 AM, Berwick officers were dispatched to the area of Parro Lane in reference to a suspicious vehicle complaint.

Upon arrival of the first officer, the vehicle was located and a person was found asleep in the driver's seat.

The officer made contact with the person who then fled on foot. Authorities were unable locate the juvenile subject that night.

During the course of the investigation, Berwick Police say it was determined that the vehicle was reported stolen out of Morgan City.

St. Mary Parish Sheriff's office and Morgan City Police Dept. were called to assist.

While searching the area for the suspect, it was discovered that a St. Mary Parish Sheriff office patrol unit had been burglarized one street over. The suspect allegedly gained entry to the patrol unit by smashing the rear window.

They say the suspect stole ammunition and other items.

The 17-year-old was located at a local school and taken into custody. He was transported to Berwick P.D. and booked on the following charges.

ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF STOLEN THINGS (FELONY)
SIMPLE BURGLARY
RESISTING AN OFFICER
POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA

The juvenile was then transported to Morgan City Police Dept. on charges relating to the stolen vehicle recovered in Berwick. All of the ammunition and other items that were taken during the burglary were also recovered during the investigation, police say.
