An Amelia man has been arrested, accused of desecrating graves at St. Andrew Catholic Church cemetery.

The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office says that they arrested 33-year-old Jorge Roberto Discua on November 5, 2020.

Deputies say that on Thursday morning, November 5, a deputy patrolling Amelia was conducting a check of the cemetery when he observed a suspect who appeared to be tampering with a grave. The deputy detained the suspect, later identified as Discua.

Through an investigation, the sheriff's office was able to link Discua to a previous incident that occurred in the early morning hours of Monday, September 14, 2020, in which a suspect entered the Amelia Cemetery at St. Andrews Catholic Church and vandalized/desecrated graves.

Discua was transported to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center and booked on the following charges:

  • Theft
  • Desecration of graves
  • Criminal damage to property-simple
  • Human remains protection acts

His bail has been set at $54,500, according to the Sheriff's Office.
