The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office is reminding citizens to be vigilant in order to avoid being an easy target for thieves.

On July 5, a homeowner in the Arbor Circle neighborhood of Bayou Vista with a security camera caught a trespasser moving around vehicles at his home around 1 a.m.

The video shows the trespasser near the resident's home and vehicles.

Police say criminals "move among the vehicles at night, looking inside and checking car doors until they find an open vehicle or until they see something that is worth the risk of breaking a window in order to steal it."

The Sheriff's Office recommends following the "9 p.m. routine," making sure all valuables are out of your car and doors are locked by this time.
