UPDATE: Chief says mom admitted doing drugs, rolling over on baby

BREAUX BRIDGE, La. — Police say a Breaux Bridge mother booked with homicide in the death of her baby admitted to them that she did drugs then fell asleep and rolled over onto her baby.

Dominique Howard, 28, was booked with negligent homicide, possession of marijuana and illegal use of drugs in the presence of a child.

Breaux Bridge Chief of Police Rollie Cantu says Howard allegedly admitted to investigators that she smoked some pot, then fell a sleep with the baby in the bed.

She allegedly rolled over on the baby in her sleep, the chief said.

Police are awaiting the results of testing and an autopsy which were performed to determine the child's cause of death.

Howard is identified as the mother of the child, a girl. Police tell KATC the four-month-old was the only child in the house with Howard.

Police began investigating the death which occurred on Sunday, Feb. 9.
