The State Fire Marshal (SFM) says that deputies are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding a house fire in Cecilia that claimed the life of a 20-year-old man.
Deputies say that while the cause of the fire is still unknown, investigators have not ruled out unattended cooking as a possible contributing factor.
The fire occurred on Thursday, October 29 just before 10:30 am at a residence in the 1100 block of Grand Anse Highway in Cecilia. The SFM previously reported the location as Breaux Bridge as the home is located near the Breaux Bridge area.
They say that firefighters from the St. Martin Parish Fire District, Arnaudville Fire Department, Henderson Fire Department and Breaux Bridge Fire Department responded to the scene.
After bringing the fire under control, the SFM says that firefighters later discovered the body of a 20-year-old male inside.
An official identification and cause of death are pending an autopsy by the St. Martin Parish Coroner’s Office, they say.
Following an assessment of the scene, deputies say they determined the fire originated in the home’s kitchen.
While collecting witness statements, deputies learned the victim often went fishing in the late evenings and returned in the early mornings and cooked before going to sleep.
Deputies say they have confirmed that the fire is not considered suspicious.
