A St. Martinville family helped their grandmother mark a special birthday on Saturday.

Ms. Rose Lewis turned 89 years old and her loved ones celebrated with a surprise drive-by parade.

Neighbors and other members of the community were in attendance for the special day, including the St. Martinville Fire and Police Departments and Mayor Melinda Mitchell.

Lewis is a staple in the St. Martinville community, as she has worked for the St. Martin Parish School System in the cafeteria for more than 30 years.

Family members say Lewis suffers from dementia, and has had a difficult time understanding why her family hasn't celebrated holidays like normal this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. So, her loved ones wanted to show their grandmother just how special she was and express to her how much they love and miss her.

"Mother, I appreciate everything you've done for us. We love you, I love you, and pray that God keeps you with good health, sound mind, and many many blessings like this," Ms. Lewis' daughter said, sharing sentiments from herself and her siblings.

Their mother had a simple, yet strong response: "I love y'all too."
