The St. Martinville City Council met Tuesday evening and entered into executive session to discuss the job performance and recent suspension of chief administrative officer Avis Gutekunst.

Mayor Melinda Mitchell placed Gutekunst on a three-day suspension last week after several checks didn't clear the bank, reports The Daily Iberian.

During the executive session Tuesday, Gutekunst was able to speak before the council regarding the incident that led to her suspension. While Mitchell has the power to issue suspensions, any issues must be brought before the council at its first meeting after a suspension for approval, the paper reports.

Councilman Mike Fuselier made a motion once the council returned to reduce the three-day suspension to a written reprimand, and that a one-day suspension that was suggested in executive session be reversed.

Fuselier added that Gutekunst had "admitted those things that fell by the wayside."

Both motions passed.

Also at the meeting the council heard from architect Paul Allain on his plans for the Bayou Teche Shoreline Development and the adjacent Festival Grounds Park.

Tuesday's meeting was live streamed on the city's Facebook page. Read more from The Daily Iberian here.
