A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Tuesday at 9:00 am to celebrate the completion of the I-10 widening project between Henderson and the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge.

DOTD says the $54.7 million project involved pavement replacement within the existing lanes in each direction for 2.7 miles along I-10 from La. 347 to the base of the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge.

An additional lane was also added in the westbound direction.

The ceremony was held at La Rumba located on Grand Pointe Hwy. in Henderson.

DOTD Secretary Dr. Shawn Wilson and other local and elected officials were on hand to speak about the project's completion.

Work began to widen the Interstate in May 2017 and was completed in December 2020. DOTD says that a total of $10 million in FASTLANE funding was allocated towards the completion of the project.

"The pavement you had on I-10 was the original pavement that Eisenhower built 50-plus years ago. It has made it very difficult to travel in terms of safety and convenience, as well as the quality of the ride. We'll be able to go a lot faster on the road administering the speed limit, but we're also going to have a much more efficient, much smoother, and, most importantly, a much safer corridor," explained DOTD Secretary Dr. Shawn Wilson.

KATC's Abby Breidenbach was LIVE with the ceremony:
