An investigation is underway after an inmate died, St. Martin deputies say.
While they were making rounds Sunday evening, St. Martin Parish Sheriff's correction officers found a male inmate unresponsive in his bunk. They began lifesaving efforts, and ambulance personnel arrived and he was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, deputies say.
The investigation remains ongoing by the St. Martin Parish Coroner’s Office and the U.S. Marshal’s Office.
The official cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy.
