A Breaux Bridge man has been arrested following an investigation into a report of an alleged sexual assault in St. Martinville early Wednesday morning.

Deputies identified the suspect as 46-year-old Dennis Joseph Comeaux.

During the investigation, deputies learned that during the course of the sexual assault, Comeaux allegedly attempted to shoot the victim twice, but the gun misfired. Deputies say he then placed the victim into the trunk of a vehicle and drove away.

The suspect stopped at a stoplight, at which point the victim was able to flee the suspect and seek assistance at the St. Martinville Police Department, deputies say.

Deputies later learned that the suspect had allegedly stolen the victim's vehicle following her escape and an immediate search for both the suspect and vehicle was conducted.

Hours later, at around 11 a.m. Thursday morning, a Trooper with Louisiana State Police Troop A saw the vehicle traveling westbound in West Baton Rouge Parish. The Trooper conducted a traffic stop and the suspect was taken into custody.

Comeaux was booked into the West Baton Rouge Parish Jail by State Police for possession of a stolen vehicle. He will be extradited to the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center at a later date, where he will be booked on the following charges:
