Vigil set for Opelousas officer who recently died

The Opelousas Police Department will be having a vigil service for an officer who recently passed away.

OPD says a vigil will be held Thursday for Pfc. Gary Lazard, who died on August 16, 2020.

Lazard served as an officer with the Opelousas Police Department for over 11 years, and previously served as a Deputy with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office. Lazard served as a Law Enforcement officer for over 20 years. He is survived by his wife and daughter.

"Lazard was beloved by his fellow officers and the citizens of Opelousas. Pfc. Lazard was known to many as “Big Sweet”, because of his warm personality. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him," Chief Martin McLendon said.

A vigil service will be held in front of the Opelousas Police Department on August 20, 2020 at 7:00 P.M.

The public is invited to attend. Social Distancing and wearing of face masks will be required.

According to an obituary, A celebration of Gary’s life will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2020 at 10:00 AM at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Viewing will begin at 8:00 AM at Opelousas Civic Center. He will be laid to rest in Serenity Memorial Park. Read more here
