Doctors and nurses at Opelousas General Health are taking steps against the spread of COVID-19.
The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine arrived at the hospital on Wednesday, and healthcare workers were some of the first to receive the newly approved vaccine.
Administrators say they want to lead by example with the vaccinations.
Dr. Amer Raza, a pulmonary critical care physician at OGH, explained two of the reasons the hospital's staff received the COVID-19 vaccine.
"We will not see that severe of the disease, and also we wanted to lead by example, so that the community looks at the physicians in the forefront for us to take the vaccines," Dr. Raza said. "It should help them be a little less afraid of science and the vaccine, that it does work."
Pfizer's vaccine was approved by the FDA last Friday, and doses began arriving in Acadiana this week. Healthcare workers, including doctors and nurses, will be among the first to receive this round of the vaccine.
