We have an update on the suspicious package found near the Family Dollar Store in Eunice.

Police say the suspicious device turned out to be harmless.

The incident began at about 7 p.m. Saturday, when the Eunice Police and Fire Departments got a 911 call about a suspicious device near the entrance of the store on East Laurel Avenue.

A flashlight was located with what appeared to be some type of power supply attached to it and connected with wiring, Chief Randy Fontenot said.

Police called the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office to send their bomb detection dog. The dog didn't alert on the device, the chief said.

The Louisiana State Police responded with their robot. The robot was used to remove the device to a safe location to be detonated. Two detonations were required. The device turned out to be harmless, the chief said.

Evidence was collected at the scene and the investigation is continuing.

The chief said no threats were called in to the store or the police.
