Two women are dead after they were hit by a vehicle that fled the scene, state police say.

The accident happened around 10:30 p.m. on La. 749 near Legion Lane, a spokesman said.

Three pedestrians were struck by a vehicle that just kept going, troopers say.

Kizzy Greene, 42, and Angela Broussard, 41, both of Opelousas, died at the scene. A third person was treated for minor injuries.

According to State Police, witnesses told troopers that Greene had received a distressing phone call about her son. She ran into the roadway, very upset, and the other women were trying to calm her and get her up and out of the street, when the vehicle hit them, witnesses told police.

Impairment is unknown and standard toxicology tests are pending. The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to call Troop I at (337) 262-5880.

State Police say: Troopers urge pedestrians to maintain a heightened level of awareness while walking near the road. Simple precautions such as wearing reflective materials, avoiding distractions, and not walking too close to roadways could prevent most pedestrian related crashes. The dangers of driving impaired and distracted can also contribute to tragedies such as these, and we ask all drivers to be vigilant behind the wheel.
