Toys and gifts of all sizes were handed out to the Opelousas community on Wednesday, December 23.

A distribution was held at Med Express Ambulance Inc. on the corner of Judson Walsh Drive in Opelousas.

"We thought that it would be a car, with a gift for each kid," said Carletta Charles. "But we had what you would call a caravan."

The toy drive takes place every year, and is always an important event, but especially so this year. More than enough toys were donated and distributed to families in need throughout Opelousas.

"We've all taken such a big hit with the COVID, so we just want to let people know that the world doesn't stop because of COVID," explained Connie Shakesnider, office manager at Med Express. "We have to keep moving and we have to keep spreading love and joy among the people to give people hope."

Med Express representatives and everyone involved in this year's event encourage community members to volunteer and donate as much as they can for next year's event in order to keep Opelousas' spirits bright.
