The Academy of the Sacred Heart celebrates 199th birthday

The Academy of the Sacred Heart in St. Landry Parish celebrated their 199th birthday on Monday.

According to the academy, the only all-girls school in Acadiana opened its doors on October 5, 1821, and it is the oldest school west of the Mississippi River in the United States.

Students and faculty were encouraged to dress as the founders of the school. Several staff were dressed as nuns.

The school celebrated with cake, balloons, and banners. The school has several other events planned throughout the year in preparations for their bicentennial.
