The St. Landry Parish Veterans Memorial Committee hosted an "Engraved Brick Drive" Friday to dedicate the last of the remaining bricks in the extended Memorial's Military Walkway.

The Brick Drive was held at the St. Landry Parish Veterans Memorial in Opelousas, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM today at 5348 Highway 182 South in Opelousas.

Each brick dedication currently costs $50 at the Brick Drive and includes three lines of engraving to recognize a veteran or current member of the military. Brick costs will increase starting January 1, 2021.

All donations will help to fund future expansion of the memorial, including the planned addition of a new visitors' center, organizers say.

Forms to dedicate bricks are also available on the Memorial's website: www.slpveteransmemorial.org

The St. Landry Parish Veterans Memorial, under the jurisdiction of St. Landry Parish Government, has been established to acknowledge and recognize all military personnel; to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country; and to create a quiet place unto itself, a place of education, a place of hope, a place of peace, serenity and beauty, a place for all of us, organizers say.

Project Director Pat Mason Guillory said the memorial is something all residents should see.

"If you've never come out here, take some time, come out and see what we've done. Strictly volunteers, and this is how we keep it up."

Guillory also mentioned they could use residents' help with cleaning storm damage on the memorial property.
