On Tuesday, St. Landry Parish President Bill Fontenot gave an update on his health.

Earlier this year, Fontenot was diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma, a type of skin cancer.

In a release, the parish president said that his cancer treatments are going well and that he is recovering.

"I wanted to let everyone know I'm doing well, and that I appreciate those who have been praying and expressing concerns for me," said Fontenot. "It really has helped me to know that so many in the parish care about my family and me."

In his absence, administrative authority has been given to St. Landry Parish Chief Financial Officer Amanda Cain and Administrative Coordinator Richard Lucito.

Fontenot said that he plans to return to work soon, but, in the meantime, continues to receive updates on all parish government activities including the recent COVID-19 response.

"Social distancing continues to be proven to be working, and now with the parish new Safe Shop order, it's more important than ever," he said "By working together, we will get through this pandemic and get the parish, its municipalities, and its businesses moving forward again."

He encouraged St. Landry Parish citizens and businesses to follow the CDC's guidelines and the Governor's Stay-at-Home order.
