A peaceful protest was held Thursday outside of the St. Landry Parish School Board Offices after technical issues caused a rough first day for many parents and students.

The peaceful protest began at 9:00 am.

Some parents say that this year's completely virtual start is already leaving students behind due to internet connectivity problems and issues navigating their new virtual environment.

Superintendent Patrick Jenkins said that while technical issues were reported across the district, most have been resolved.

Parents tell KATC that they are hopeful that their voices will be heard and that the school board will reconsider their decision to continue with the 100 percent virtual school year.

"I was told we were going to get Chromebooks," said parent Suzanne Pitre of her concerns. "My child received an eight-inch tablet. The volume is so low on it, you can barely hear anything."

Protesters stood on the front lawn of the school board office holding signs that read "open our schools," "hear our voices" and "let us decide."

St. Landry Parish District 7 School Board Member Josh Boudreaux commented on Thursday's protest.

"Please remember that our children are watching and will 'do as we do' when they become adults," he said. "Let’s be LEADERS and teach our young ones how to use their first amendment while preserving dignity and respect for all."
