Opelousas family cleaning up after overnight storms damage home

Posted at 11:20 AM, Apr 23, 2020

Overnight storms in the northern portions of Acadiana left behind damage to homes and property.

And one Opelousas family is now cleaning up after high winds caused extensive damage to their home in the Bayou Teche Subdivision.

Parts of the home's roof were blown off and debris could be seen across several neighborhood yards.

"It came through like a thief in the night," says Wyleah King who lives in the house, adding that several windows were broken.

"We just had to all huddle up and then after it passed when we did look outside, the entire roof was gone, my fireplace was gone," King said. "It was all in the yard. Debris was everywhere and they had to go get it out of some of the neighbors' yards."

"They're all busted," she said. "Things were flying off the walls."

While, thankfully, no one was injured, the family says they are not sure what their next step will be.

KATC's Abby Breidenbach was LIVE at the home on Thursday morning.

Tornado watches and warnings were issued for Evangeline, St. Landry, Jeff Davis and Acadia parishes in the early morning hours on Thursday.

Those watches and warnings have since expired.

Across the south, 6 people were killed when severe weather spawned possible tornadoes in Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana.

In Alexandria, damage was reported at a live stock building on the campus of LSUA.

A woman in Woodworth, Louisiana was killed as a result of the storms, according to the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office.
