An Opelousas man is sharing his story of overcoming what seemed like insurmountable odds to continuing living his life to the fullest.

Randall Thomas, Sr. currently goes to dialysis three times a week.

He's in stage 5 renal failure and also in the stages of heart failure. And while those circumstances may not be the best, Thomas says he's grateful for the journey that he's on.

"After going through so much, it's a journey, you go through dips and curves. I just thank God I was able to stay on the path."

Thomas' wife, Catherine, says he's had open heart surgery in the past and on Wednesday, the family will head to Houston for testing. Those tests could mean another open heart surgery for Thomas.

"It's not an easy road," he says. "But I'm still traveling and I'm not going to stop until I get to the finish line."

Thomas was in hospice care in January of this year, but his wife says he surpassed hospice's timeline in March and was removed from their care - a survivor.

Thomas says he's thankful to be alive, even through the difficult circumstances.

A professional carpenter, Randall has contributed much to the community of Opelousas. His wife says he has renovated several properties in the area, including some for elderly residents.

He's raised six children and has six grandchildren. He is an avid LSU fan.

The family hopes their trip to Houston will be quick with no complications.
