An Opelousas man has been booked for his involvement in a disturbance that led to a fatal shooting on September 6.
Officers with the Opelousas Police Department say that 35-year-old Brandon Richard Sr. was arrested and booked Tuesday, September 15.
Police say they were called to reports of a person being shot around 7:00 pm on September 6 in the 200 block of Oleander Street.
When officers arrived they say they located a man suffering from a single gunshot wound. Officers determined that the shooting had occurred outside city limits and the St. Landry Sheriff's Office was notified.
During that investigation it was revealed that the shooting took place on Lofton Street and that a group of juveniles and Richard were allegedly involved in a fight on W. Grolee Street in front of Grolee Elementary School.
Police say that Richard had brought a juvenile to Grolee Street to fight because of another disturbance that had occurred earlier in the day between the group of juveniles.
During the fight, police say Richard brandished a firearm and threatened others in the area to not get involved and let them fight.
A brief fight did occur, police say, which then led to the shooting.
One person later died.
The Opelousas Police Department is recommending that parents or any adults not get involved in situations that encourage or contribute to minors being involved in any acts of violence or delinquency.
"These adults will be held accountable to the highest extent applicable by law," the department said.
Richard was booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail on the following charges:
- One count of contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.
- Four counts of Aggravated assault with a firearm.
