An Opelousas man has been arrested, accused of shooting another person following a disturbance in Melville.

According to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office on May 5, 2020, Chief Anthony Moreau of the Melville Police Department requested assistance in investigating a shooting in their city limits. When detectives arrived, they identified the suspect involved in the shooting as Devonta Edwards of Opelousas.

Deputies say witnesses identified Edwards as the person that fired his weapon at another man. A press release states that the man who was shot at and Edwards' wife were involved in a disturbance prior to Edwards shooting at him. Deputies say Edwards left the scene after the shooting.

A warrant was obtained for Edwards and he was arrested with the help of the US Marshal's Office and housed at the Lafayette Sheriff's Office.

Due to a previous gunshot wound, not related to this case, Edwards underwent surgery and will appear in St. Landry District Court on May 28, 2020.

Edwards was charged with Attempted 2nd Degree Murder and released on bond.
