Opelousas Police are working a homicide this morning.

Last night, a patrol officer heard gunshots at about 8:30 p.m. near the corner of N. Market and Cheney streets. The officer found a man lying next to the railroad tracks. The man was conscious but unable to say who shot him, a spokesman said.

The man was transported to a local hospital, where he died around midnight. Several homes and cars nearby also were hit with bullets, police say.

Detectives processed the scene for evidence, which is on its way to the crime lab.
