Eunice Junior High will be temporarily closed for the remainder of October due to mold growth found in several classrooms.

The St. Landry Parish School board says that the mold is not black mold, but mold that typically occurs underneath surfaces or furnishings.

The mold issues, they say, are due to high humidity and excessive moisture in the main building on campus.

"We know drastic changes in weather such as significant wind and rain results in rapid changing temperatures and high humidity which can impact indoor spaces," said Superintendent Patrick Jenkins in a letter to parents. "Electrical power losses to these indoor spaces along with periods of occupancy followed by periods of no occupancy makes managing indoor spaces very difficult."

Now that the mold has been found, Jenkins says that appropriate cleaning can begin in those spaces, "in order to maintain the safest indoor environment we can provide."

The school will be closed for the remainder of October so that inspections, testing and cleaning can be done by a certified mold removal and restoration company.

Students at Eunice Junior High, according to Jenkins, will continue the learning path they are currently on.

More information will be provided to parents later this week.
