Mayor of Washington cites ill health as reason for resignation

The Secretary of States Office has released James Olivier's official Letter of Resignation as the Mayor of the Town of Washington.

In the letter dated December 19, Olivier says that due to ill health he is unable to perform the duties of the position.

The resignation was made, according to the letter, on "the recommendation and urging" of medical professionals.

Olivier's resignation was effective on Thursday, at 4:00 pm.

The town of Washington now has 19 days to make an appointment to fill the vacancy and call a special election.

The special election, which is required in connection with this vacancy will be November 3, 2020 (primary), December 5, 2020 (general), with July 15-17, 2020 (qualifying).
