Grand Coteau Elementary held a fun filled pep rally about reading.

Students gathered Friday for their Read Across America Celebration which kicked off next week's planned events at the school.

Several local politicians and business owners joined in with students. Students were asked to show the most school spirit and excitement to read and win a spirit stick.

Students wore head bands featuring Dr. Seuss characters. Seuss is central to the Read Across America campaign. The date of the Read Across America is March 2, Dr. Seuss' birthday.

Brandon Bobb Principal at Grand Coteau Elementary says that this event engages students and builds their interest in reading.

"We are hoping this event will light the fire or spark some intellectual interest in continuing this, not just for students but for faculty and staff, as well," Bobb said.

The school plans to continue this as a yearly celebration.

Read Across America which is a national program was created to help motivate kids to read, bring the joys of reading to students of all ages, and make all children feel valued and welcome.
