The St. Landry Parish Council will select an interim Parish President during a special meeting next Wednesday, August 26.
Parish President Bill Fontenot will step down Friday to focus on his health.
According to the Secretary of State's calendar, the earliest a special election can happen for that office is March.
The parish's charter states the council has 30 days to appoint a replacement for Fontenot and, because there are three years left in Fontenot's term, a special election will need to be called.
Fontenot was diagnosed earlier this year with Squamous Cell Carcinoma, a type of skin cancer. He was elected to his third term in November of 2019.
