Poppa's Fried Chicken is closed due to damages sustained in a fire late Tuesday night.
A spokesperson for the Lafayette Fire Department says firefighters responded to the commercial fire at Poppa's, located at 810 SE Evangeline Thruway, shortly before midnight.
Someone driving by the business noticed smoke coming from the building and reported the fire.
When firefighters arrived, the building was closed and smoke was coming from the building's eaves, the spokesperson says. The fire was discovered in a storage room between the kitchen and customer seating area.
According to the owners, the restaurant closed around 8 p.m. Fire officials say the fire originated in the storage room, then spread to the attic and kitchen, causing substantial fire damage to the building's interior.
The restaurant will be closed because of damages, LFD says. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
