According to USA Today, Lowe's is laying off "thousands" of workers who handle maintenance and product assembly tasks. The chain is cutting costs in an attempt to boost profits.

The chain store said that it is "moving to third-party assemblers and facility services to allow Lowe's store associates to spend more time on the sales floor serving customers."

Lowe's is based in Mooresville, North Carolina and employs about 300,000 people in its 2,200 stores.

The company announced plans to close 51 stores in 2018.
